Here lies the concept, MSY.
It advocated yields too high,
And didn't spell out how to slice the pie.
We bury it with best of wishes.
Especially on behalf of fishes.

The seas are dying and NZ not helping: expert

New Zealand is in danger of losing its status as a world leader in managing fisheries, says the researcher behind a new documentary on overfishing.

Charles Clover, a former environment editor at Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper, says New Zealand's reputation is under threat from its orange roughy catch and an almost complete lack of knowledge about the health of many of its fisheries.

A documentary film based on Clover's book The End of the Line opens in New Zealand tomorrow after an influential run in Britain.

The British food-shop chain Pret a Manger ditched tuna sandwiches and several high-end restaurants changed their fish-buying policies after it screened.

In the film, scientists warn that fish stocks will be in dire trouble by the middle of the century if current rates of fishing continue.

Fantastic movie....best horror I have seen in ages...
I am never surprised at the stupidity of humankind,as I have long past having any faith in humankind when money is involved.
The irreparable damage we have done to the worlds fish is just unforgivable...

I was shocked and disappointed to see just how bad the situation was,but even just watching this movie gave me more tools in the shape of education to have an opinion and educate others and guide my family towards doing their bit in the grand scheme of things as WE can make a difference.

Support Marine Reserves... for a start... :D

I can't wait to see this flick over here (?).
It astonishies me sometimes. At the moment there is a big move by the Media to dish all the Greenhouse/Global Warming/Environmental and even Avatar verses The Hurt Locker, this month in a fervour I've never seen before.
Now we all know that ALL OUT NUCLEAR WARFARE never actually happened.
...but it could have.
I guess they forget that all out environmental disaster could happen.
...but luckily things are improving.
Some journos are strange. I wonder if there ever were some back in the 80's who wrote articles about how stupid people were to believe in annihilation by all out thermo-nuclear warfare.
Just drifting along with whatever is current.

One very interesting thing I found in my travels overseas was that certain types of news events are omitted in certain countries....even stranger certain historical events even seem to have somehow disappeared completely...

Don't you love the media....well I would take them over Parking Wardens I guess... feckers that they are!!

Oh give me a Journo (even Nikki Gemmell) over a Parking Warden any day. I'm in the process of getting a Solicitor in regards to some Parking Company trying to Financially Assault ( ) me for $168 when they tried to ping me upon Hospital property while using my van for Hospital work for all but 10 minutes in a certified Hospital Carpark space. Then they got someone from the Motors Registry to pump out peoples details, although this can only be done upon Public or Council roads, which this ticket wasn't - so again illegal. I've already warned them, but it seems they need to know a $5,000 lesson! :x

Just a note to anyone browsing the forum in Britain that this doco is on tonight (Saturday March 6) at 7.15pm on Channel 4. Really glad it's being shown at prime time (albeit on channel 4) and I'm looking forward to seeing it. If the emphasis is on the negative economic impact over fishing causes, then maybe some will sit up and listen. Here's hoping!
